Tune VLAN parameters for racks
When you create an Abiquo rack, you can adjust the VLAN parameters to ensure the most efficient allocation of virtual datacenters (VDCs) to racks.
You can use the "Reserved VLANs per VDC" and the "VLAN pool size for VDCs that exceed reservation" as well as the VDC allocation limits to control VLAN allocation.
The platform only uses the "Reserved VLANs per VDC" to decide how many VDCs can be deployed in a rack. The platform does not reserve VLANs for specific VDCs. To prevent a VDC from using more than a certain number of VLANs, set this number as an Allocation limit for the VDC.
By default, the platform uses the following balanced scenario.
- Reserved VLANs per VDC = 1 (or other low value)
- VLAN pool size for VDCs that exceed reservation = 10%
This scenario has the following benefits.
- It balances VLAN allowance with number of VDCs per rack
- It allows low average number of VLANS for each VDC
- It has a small pool of VLANs for VDCs that require more than reserved VLANs
- Remember: to control the maximum number of VLANs per VDC, set allocation limits
You can only modify these parameters on a rack with no VDCs deployed.
For detailed information about VLAN allocation, please see VLAN Allocation Algorithm.
