Upload an ISO disk from the local filesystem

To make new VM templates available in the platform, add them to the Catalogue.

In private cloud, you can upload VM templates from a local filesystem in OVA format (multiple disks), or as an ISO file, or a single disk file.

This document describes how to upload an ISO disk from a local file to create a VM template.

Privileges: Upload virtual machine template

Before you begin:

  1. We recommend that you mount the ISO as a SATA drive.  If you mount an ISO as an IDE drive, you cannot make changes to the drive in the platform.

  2. To be able to remove an ISO drive after you use it, specify an empty disk. Users can change the size of the disk before they deploy a VM

Notes:

  • For very large files, it may be convenient to use another method of adding templates

  • If you do not have any hypervisors, the platform will convert the template into ALL possible hypervisor formats. So before you add templates, add your hypervisors to save space on the NFS repository. See V2V Conversion.

To add a new template from a disk in an ISO file:

  1. Go to Catalogue → select datacenter  Templates

  2. Click the + add button and select Upload from local file

  3. Enter the General information to create a new VM template

    1. You must enter CPU and RAM for the VM but you can change it later

    2. For Icon enter the URL of the template's icon

  4. Go to Disks and click the + add button

  5. Select Disk from ISO file

  6. Enter the details of the disk

    1. For Controller type select a SATA or IDE for an ISO disk

      1. If you select IDE, you cannot change the drive in the platform

    2. The Controller field is for SCSI controller types only

    3. If you select Datastore tier will be required while creating a virtual machine, then to create a VM, the user must have the privilege to Manage virtual machine hard disks

  7. If you enter the size to Add an extra empty disk, users can change the size of the disk before they deploy a VM. The platform will use this disk for an ISO installation.

  8. Click Save. The platform will send this disk to the hypervisor as the boot disk.
If your disk is not a bootable system disk, we recommend that you add a bootable system disk and move the original disk to another position.

    • You can edit the uploaded disk but you cannot delete it before you save the template.

    • You cannot resize the primary disk before you deploy the VM

  9. Optionally go to Variables

    1. The variables will be added automatically to new VMs. Users can edit the variables when configuring the VM

    2. After the VM deploys, users can then access variables in the guest

    3. Check your provider's documentation about variables, but generally you should not use variables to store confidential information

  10. Go to Advanced

    1. For VMware you must set the VMware guest Operating system type to use to deploy the VM.
To use the latest supported version, do not enter an OS version
      For more details, see:

    2. Enter the default User and Password for VMs created with this template

  11. Click Save to create the template

After you save the template, you can edit the template and add more disks, edit, reorder and delete disks. You can also add a cost code.
