Backup

This page describes:

  1. How to define backup integrations to use in private cloud data centers

  2. How to create backup policies for a data center so that users can apply them to their VMs.

Introduction to Backup as a Service

Abiquo offers Backup as a Service so you can directly offer your users a local self-service backup without creating your own integrations, and you can automatically add backup services to the customer's bill and charge by GBs! For details of the cloud user experience of backups, see VM backups.

Abiquo has backup plugins for Veeam, Networker, and Rubrik. See Abiquo backup plugins.

Abiquo also supports self-service VMware snapshots. See Abiquo and VM snapshots for VMware.

How to configure backups in Abiquo

To configure backups in Abiquo, do these steps

  1. Obtain the license for your backup plugin from Abiquo Customer Service

  2. Configure the backup plugin, see Abiquo backup plugins

  3. Create a backup manager, see below

  4. Edit backup policy properties

  5. Create a backup policy

  6. Allow tenant enterprises to work with backup policies. See Configure an enterprise in a cloud location | Allow a tenant to use backup polices in a datacenter

  7. Allow users to work with backups. See VM backups for a list of privileges that users will require for each backup action.

Create a backup manager

In private cloud datacenters, Abiquo offers backup plugins that support popular backup systems, such as

Before you begin:

  1. Obtain the license for your backup plugin

  2. Configure the backup plugin, see Abiquo backup plugins

To create a Backup manager to connect Abiquo to your backup service in a datacenter or public cloud region:

Privileges: Access infrastructure view and private DCs, View datacenter details, Manage datacenter backup configuration, Manage devices

  1. Go to Infrastructure

  2. Go to Private and open a datacenter or go to Public and open a public cloud region

  3. Go to Backup policies

  4. Click the Backup manager button

  5. In the dialog, for the Endpoint, enter the URL to connect to the backup system API

    1. For Veeam 10 and Veeam 11: https://veeam.example.com:9398/api/

      1. Don’t forget the slash at the end

    2. For Networker: https://networker.host.domain:9090/nwrestapi/v3/global

    3. For Rubrik: https://rubrik.host.domain:4440/api

  6. For the User, enter the user of the backup system. For some plugins, also enter the vCenter user. The administrator can configure a different separator (instead of #) using Abiquo configuration properties.

    1. Veeam user

    2. Networker user#vCenter user

    3. For Rubrik with vCenter: Rubrik user#vCenter user

  7. For the Password, enter the password of the backup system. For some plugins, also enter the vCenter password. The administrator can configure a different separator.

    1. Veeam password

    2. Networker password#vCenter password

    3. Rubrik password#vCenter password

  8. Click Save

Abiquo will create the backup manager.

Test the backup lifecycle

When you create the backup manager, Abiquo does not fully validate the connection details so we recommend that you test a backup lifecycle.
- A connection will be made to the backup system when a user requests a backup operation.
- A connection will be made to the vCenter (Networker) when the user requests a restore.

When editing the backup manager, you can modify all values except the backup type. If you change the backup manager, future requests to the backup system will use the new values.

Update backup policies

When a backup policy is assigned to a VM, the administrator may only edit the general information, which is the Name, Code, and Description of the backup policy.
