Backup

Create a backup manager

In private cloud datacenters, Abiquo offers optional backup plugins that support popular backup systems, such as Veeam and Networker for use with VMware hypervisors, and Rubrik for use with VMware including VCD.

Before you begin:

  1. Obtain the license for your backup plugin

  2. Configure the backup plugin, see Abiquo backup plugins

To create a Backup manager to connect Abiquo to your backup service in a datacenter or public cloud region:

Privileges: Access infrastructure view and private DCs, View datacenter details, Manage datacenter backup configuration, Manage devices

  1. Go to Infrastructure

  2. Go to Private and open a datacenter or go to Public and open a public cloud region

  3. Go to Backup policies

    Backup policies in infrastructure view
  4. Click the Backup manager button

  5. Enter the details of the backup manager to define the connection to the backup system.

    1.  See the Backup endpoints and credentials table below

      Create backup manager
  6. Click Save

Abiquo will create the backup manager.

Test the backup lifecycle

When you create the backup manager, Abiquo does not fully validate the connection details so we recommend that you test a backup lifecycle.
- A connection will be made to the backup system when a user requests a backup operation.
- A connection will be made to the vCenter (Networker) when the user requests a restore.

When editing the backup manager, you can modify all values except the backup type. If you change the backup manager, future requests to the backup system will use the new values.

Note: For Networker, the vCenter credentials are mandatory. Networker uses these credentials for the "Restore a VM when it is not allocated" option

Endpoint

This is the URL for connecting to the backup system API. Tip: When adding a Veeam backup manager, don't forget to add the slash "/" at the end of the URL.

Examples:

Veeam 9.5u4: https://veeam.host.domain:9399/api/
Veeam 10: https://veeam.example.com:9398/api/
Networker: https://networker.host.domain:9090/nwrestapi/v3/global
Rubrik: https://rubrik.host.domain:4440/api

User

User for the backup system.

For Networker, and for Rubrik with vCloud you must also enter the vCenter user and the format is as follows:

Networker user#vCenter user
Rubrik user#vCenter user

By default the separator character is '#' but the administrator can change this value.

Password

Password for the backup system.

For Networker, and for Rubrik with vCloud only, you must also enter the vCenter password and the format is as follows:

  • Networker password#vCenter password

  • Rubrik password#vCenter password

By default the separator character is '#' but the administrator can change this value

Configure backup policy properties

To define the characteristics of the backups offered in the platform, configure backup properties.

To configure the backup properties:

  1. Go to Infrastructure

  2. Go to Private and select a datacenter or Public and select a public cloud region

  3. Go to Backup policies

  4. Click Edit properties and configure properties according to the Backup policy properties table below

  5. Click Save

Enable multiple restore

Allow users to restore a backup more than once. If enabled, when the backup status is failed or success, the Restore link in the UI will activate again.

Enable multiple backup policies

Allow users to select more than one backup policy for a VM

Enable update when deployed

Allow users to change backup policies and backup details when a VM is deployed

Enable backup now

Display a Backup now button on the Backup tab that will enable users to request an immediate manual backup.

  • Networker and Rubrik only

Create a backup policy

Administrators create backup policies to present backups to cloud users for self-service. When users configure a VM, they can select å backup policy.

To create a new backup policy:

  1. In your datacenter's infrastructure, go to Backup policies

  2. Click the + add button and enter the details

    1. Code: this identifies the policy and it must be unique in the datacenter. Abiquo can use the Code attribute to match policies that the administrator already created in the backup system. See the backup plugin configuration documentation for more information

  3. Go to Complete backup. Abiquo backup plugins only support complete backups

  4. Select from the backup options to include in the policy

    1. Defined hour: The Veeam backup integration does not support this option

    2. Hourly: A backup at an interval of hours. Enter an integer less than 24

  5. For each field in the backup type, choose how to set the values:

    1. Fixed: set in backup policy

    2. Don't apply: set by backup system

    3. Define in VM: the user must set the value and will require the appropriate privileges to create a backup

Veeam will always back up ALL disks when performing a backup. To prevent users from selecting individual disks:

    1. For the option to Select disks, select Don't apply

    2. Remove the user privilege to Manage virtual machine backup disks

  6. Click Save

After you create a policy, you must allow the tenants to use the policy for their VMs:

  1. You will need to edit the enterprise and its Allowed datacenter on the Backups tab.
See Configure an enterprise in a cloud location#Allowatenanttousebackuppoliciesinadatacenter.

  2. By default the privileges that allow users to configure backups of their VMs are only assigned to the Cloud Administrator role.
Assign them to your user roles as required. See Privileges

Users can then add backups as described at VM backups

Update backup policies

When a backup policy is assigned to a VM, the administrator may only edit the general information, which is the Name, Code, and Description of the backup policy.
