The following example describes the network configuration for a basic Abiquo platform virtualization scenario on ESXi or KVM:

  1. Create port groups (ESXi) or virtual bridges (KVM)
    1. Management network
      • Configure with a VLAN tag that is EXCLUDED from the tags available to Abiquo for assigning to virtual networks
    2. Service network
      • Configured in trunk mode (VLAN All - 4095)
      • Enable promiscuous option
    3. Storage network (optional)
      • Configure with a VLAN tag that is EXCLUDED from the tags available to Abiquo for assigning to virtual networks
  2. Configure Abiquo platform components and hypervisors
    • Configure one VNIC in the VM definition
      • Attach a VNIC to each port group (Management, Service, Storage, etc.)
    • Use suitable IP ranges for each VM
      • Check by MAC address which NIC is associated with each VNIC and therefore which port group/virtual bridge it is attached to.
  3. If the DHCP Server (or DHCP Relay Server) will be run on a virtual machine on ESXi, see How to configure an ESXi host to support VLAN tagging
